Wireless

Yet another item to add to the List of Things I Don't Understand.

My new house (omg! new house! ahem...) has wireless internet. I need to buy a wireless card thingie. Then I will be able to blog from my new bedroom. Or my new bathroom. Or my new backyard.

These are things I know.

Things I don't know: how does wireless work? will I be able to like drive around and read your blogs from, like, the beach? or, ooh, could I fly to somewhere, say San Francisco, and read your blog right there next to you?

Also, what wireless card do I have to get?

Please help me.

you will be able to use the wireless in sanfran, but it will be a different wireless. i think it works like cell phones--you know how sometimes you don't get good service, and how sometimes you get no service at all? but then you get close to another 'tower' or whatever, and you're in business again.
it works like that, but that's all i know.

    i am retarded, after all.

  2. You need two things to use wireless. A wireless card in your computer, and something sending out a wireless signal. So in addition to your card, you also need a wireless modem (which it sounds like you already have, since you say your house has wireless internet.)

If you are not near your own wireless modem, you can possibly tap into someone else's if they have neglected to put a password on their wireless signal (which many people do!) Plus some places, like some cafes, have their wireless signals open all throughout their stores on purpose.

So... for home, you need a wireless modem in addition to your wirless card. For elsewhere (or maybe even at home, depending on how close your neighbors are) you need to be near someone else's wireless modem to be online wirelessly. Once you've installed your card, take your computer to some of your favorite places and see if you can get a signal :)

(You can also purchase plug in cards that work kind of like a modem attached to a cell phone and with those you can get service anywhere a cell phone could get service, but those are expensive.)

As for what kind of card, that will depend on your computer. Ask the geeks at the computer store :)
