Personally, I like 09 was feeling a bit left out. Everyone was complaining about how 2008 was the Year of Suck, and he got jealous, and threw a fit, and was all like, "You think that was bad? You ain't seen nothing, bitches."
And then he threw a virus at my computer, loss of signal at my internet, and fucking THIEVES at my SCOOTER. People are fuckers. That is all.
2009, you're a badass. We get it. Now can we just please try to get along?

Falling Apart
My world seems to be falling apart. Like, literally. This is not me being all dramatic because I can't find my favourite pair of boxer shorts or whatever. (Although seriously? Holly? Tiff? Las Vegas? Did I leave them with you?)
I had to take the Scarlet Lady in for a service today. It only took a few hours, and I told them to check the spark plugs, which I'm pretty sure is what caused her little tantrum the other day. If I pick her up tomorrow and they say that wasn't it, I'm going to send them back in to look for some other problem.
My wireless internet adaptor cracked the shits and refused to be recognised by my computer. I spent a very unproductive 23 minutes on the phone with tech support, who told me I could call them back, press 4 instead of 2 and they'd arrange for me to send the adaptor to them. I said thanks, hung up, and spent five minutes at Tandy getting a replacement and free upgrade.
Our shower head has been wobbly for some time, but nothing that affected the basic operation of the system. Until yesterday, when it decided to break completely off. Now, you get to have a shower with bonus childhood memories of playing under the hose. You also get to wait around the house all day for a plumber who didn't show but bloody well better be here bright and early tomorrow morning, or at the very least by the time you get back from the gym.
Ok, I guess it was me being a little dramatic, since all the things that have broken are fixed, or on their way to being fixed. I'm just glad it wasn't anything essential, like, I don't know, MY SCOOTER, or MY INTERNET, or MY SHOWER. OH WAIT.
Oops. The plumber just showed. I can offically quit my fricking whinging.

A Sign From God
Today did not go as I intended. For one, I had to skip the gym, which I was actually looking forward to, since I had a less than stellar day there yesterday, even though I finally got on the constantly-occupied rowers, so I wanted to make up for it, but word on the street is god did not want me to go to the gym today.
As I was forced to admit last summer, the Scarlet Lady does not enjoy the heat as much as I do. And with summer becoming increasingly assertive, I'd already decided that she wouldn't be ridden to work (40mins away) if it was over say 35°C (95°F). Short trips like to uni and Marion, no worries, anytime.
Today? It was 32°. We rode to uni. And she pitched a massive shitfit. That big steep hill up to campus was just too much for her. I had to leave her there while I went up and handed my assignment in, then crossed my fingers she could make it all the way home.
Turns out? She couldn't.* I definitely give her points for getting across the South Road intersection, which is about nine lanes across, but I would have appreciated it even more if she could have made it all the way home. Luckily, I found a place to leave her til it was cooler, even if she protested slightly at the temperature not being below thirty even at 6:30 at night.

I could not make this up. She happened to finally throw in the towel outside the carpark to a chuch bearing that sign. I couldn't not leave her there.
*She is home now, and grounded at least for the weekend, since I have to work, and tomorrow is supposed to be 37 degrees (98.6°F). If only she and I had more in common!

Thanks a lot, Random Girl
Scene: I've had class, finished typing and printing my Sherlock Holmes and House notes, and bought the book to read for next week. I approach my scooter.
Random Girl Ready To Ride Away On Her Scooter, Which Is The Same As Mine, Except For Its Colour*: Hey.
Me: Hey.
[We exchange the super-secret scooter-riders' handshake.]
Random Girl: Have you ever had any trouble with yours?
Me: Well, I rode it to Noarlunga in 40 degree heat last summer.
Her: And it cut out?
Me: Yeah. I wouldn't recommend it. She's been good apart from that.
Her: Mine's been smoking. A lot. [Demonstrates.]
Me: Wow. Well, MINE'S never done ANYTHING like THAT. [She said, EVER SO SMUGLY.]
She: Rides away on her cute little scooter (in a cloud of smoke, but hey, she's riding).
Me: Tries to start my scooter. Fails. Repeatedly.
NOW what the hell am I supposed to do? The automatic non-starter button is in its startable position. She was not in the snow, hail, or even rain. She was in the sun for crying out loud, and she always starts better when it's warmer. She has petrol AND oil.
Actually, maybe it was the shock of her being warm, dry, and not being beyond empty that did it to her. Fuck.
*And the fact that it works. Oops! Spoiler!

My Bad
You know how some people have faces that could stop traffic?
Turns out, not only do I stop traffic, I cause accidents by doing so!
Seriously, there I was, minding my own business, waiting to cross the road, when this lovely guy stops for me. So does the lovely lady behind him. Not so much the dopey guy behind her.
The woman lost her whole front bumper - it was impaled on the first guy's towbar. No-one was hurt thank god.
Luckily, I have the Scarlet Lady back now, and will never walk across a road again.

If Only
If my shift hadn't been changed I would have started at 9 instead of 12.
If I'd started at 9, I would have discovered the flat tyre in time to catch a bus or train.
If my shift hadn't been changed from eight hours to five it wouldn't have been forced to be none.
If I had known I would get the day off I would have gone to the basketball.
Grr.

What's up? What's down?

Translation: Heshan left Kim's fish with me while they're away, and I was terrified it wouldn't survive with me as it's only caregiver.
Luckily: Jollan is back and I've offloaded the fish (still alive!) to her.

Translation: The Scarlet Lady cacked it.
Luckily: I convinced her to make it all the way home (later, without her getting a ticket in the meantime). She's now being checked out by the people at the scooter place. Fingers crossed.

A Letter From The Scarlet Lady
Dear Adelaide Drivers,
Hi. Feel free to not beep, yell, or give the finger in my direction. I know I'm slow. There is no need for you to point this out. I am not doing it to piss you off. However, if you ride so close up my arse I can hear your passenger bitching about how slow I'm going, I may possibly be forced to slow down.
Feel free to overtake me. In fact, I encourage it. Can I make a couple of suggestions however. Use your indicators. I don't need other people pissed at you, because angry drivers are NSFS.* More importantly, there are two lanes. (There better be at least two lanes if you are attempting to overtake me.) You need to get all the way into the other lane before getting so far up my arse etc etc. Then you need to stay in the other lane - your lane - until you are all the way past me, preferably until I can't read your stupid bumper stickers, before coming back into MY lane. Personal space, dude.
Feel free to exchange your smelly, noisy, boring car for a scooter or motorbike. This will force you to pay attention when you drive. Then you will notice things like the sucky road surface, and the other drivers on the road, and the smell of frangipani on the corner.
Sincerely,
The Scarlet Lady.
*If you don't know what this means, you clearly haven't been looking at any interesting Not Safe For Work sites. Don't lie, we know you do.

Poor SL, nobody loves you
I'm going to the movies tomorrow with ALyn. She told me a big long story about how she has to go to the doctors, which is really almost at Flinders, so it's totally on her way (um, Flinders is on the way to Glenelg, where the cinema is, anyway) and she can totally pick me up. NO NEED FOR ME TO RIDE MY SCOOTER.
But see, the thing is, I like riding my scooter. A car is primarily a way to get from Point A to Point B. I go for rides on my scooter for no reason at all. I invent things that I have to pick up from Marion just so I can go for a ride. It's fun. (And cold, sometimes, which is neither here nor there right now, but I expect it will be closer to here when winter actually comes.)
Point is, yes being on the roads is dangerous. It's dangerous in a car, truck, bus, motorbike, and scooter. I've dropped my scooter once, and most likely will do it again. If y'all are concerned about the safety of scooter-driders, pay attention when you're driving your big fat cars.
I'm a decent drider; if you are a good car driver, then everything will be fine.

Easter at Aldinga Beach Pt 1
Aldinga via Christie's Beach
Hi! I'm back! You didn't notice what? Well, I WAS gone. And now I'm back!
So. We went to Aldinga for the weekend. V drode the Scarlet Lady and SW and I took the hire car. No, I didn't crash it. Are you proud? Now, we had very very strict instructions from V to NOT go to Victor Harbour. I don't know what he has against Victor Harbour, but apparantly we were under no circumstances allowed to go on any road that might lead there.
Oops. So, this is where we are:
And this is where we need to be: Waaaay over there.

Quick, turn the other way!

And this is where we need to be: Waaaay over there.
Me: Ok, where do we need to go?
SW: Ummm.
Me: Dude!
SW: Ok, ok, I'm looking, just wait a second.
Me: There's a thing up ahead.
SW: Ok, there's gonna be a thing up ahead.
Me: [Grrr.]
SW: You need to go either left or straight ahead.
Me: Which way do I go?
SW: You have to pick one, either left or straight ahead.
SW: You have to pick one, either left or straight ahead.
Me: I'm not picking one! Which one do we need?
SW: It doesn't matter, either one, just go left or straight ahead.
Me: PICK ONE.
SW: Go right.

Rainy Days
Who's the smart cookie who decided to go for a scooter ride on the rainiest day Adelaide's ever had?
Who got lots of sympathetic grins from guys on her way out of the Marion carpark?
Who got beeped at as she went sloooowly around the corner through a puddle a foot deep. (Am only exaggerating very very slightly.) Idiots. And turn your fricking lights on.

Let's kill a lot of trees
Lady at the MVR: Is it registered in joint names?
Me: Yes.
Lady at the MVR: You'll need to provide proof of SA address for both people.
Me: The other person doesn't live here.
Lady at the MVR: So you want it just in your name. If you want to change any details you'll need an inspection.
Me: I'd like to keep it in both [so I don't have to get an inspection].
Lady at the MVR: Ok, just bring in proof of SA address for both of you.
Me: Ok, guess I'll just go get an inspection then.
***
Other customer chick at the inspection place: ~plays with her phone. beep. beep-beep. beep. beep-beep.~
Me and a bunch of blokes also waiting in this tiny little room: ~exchange glanes because honestly.~
Me: Excuse me? Could you possibly turn the sound off?
Her: I'm not playing anything ~shows me her phone so I can see that indeed her phone is making all these annoying noises without her 'playing' anything at all.
Her: I'm not playing anything ~shows me her phone so I can see that indeed her phone is making all these annoying noises without her 'playing' anything at all.
Me: Um, ok [crazy lady] [shut your phone up mkay thanks].
***
Different Lady at the MVR: Ok, have you got the forms for that?
Me: Here's the registration one, and the license one, and the inspection one, and the current registration, and the proof of address, and my current license.
Her: Right. You just need to fill out this form for me.
Me: Sure [are you fucking kidding me?].
Later...
Her: Was it registered in joint names?
Me:Yes.
Her: Why did you get an inspection?
Me: [Grrrrr].
***
So, the Scarlet Lady was inspected and is now registered and her owner licensed. And out two hundred and forty bucks. Good work MVR. Now I just have to figure out how to put on the new rego plate (and get the old one off first).
The essential scootering kit.
Lines of my life
Clockwise from the bottom:
the line for dinner at the Hall vs Village Soccer match*
the line at the MVR**
the line at Unibooks.
*we won.
and also, why were the Village People eating our dinner? They don't get dinner. We get dinner. This was our only dinner, so why were they eating it?
**see: the post I'm about to write about the MVR.

Asshat Adelaide Drivers
I was brought up to believe in the general suckiness of Adelaide drivers. "Pfft, Adelaide drivers," was commonly heard in scathing tones.
Since I've been here, (and been forced to dride with these lower-class road-users) I haven't really found them to be that bad.
I like the slow speed of their traffic-jams, and as long as I don't fall in a manhole-cover or in between train tracks, it's all good.
However.
You guys seem to see me even if I'm in the middle of lots and lots of traffic. I've even noticed that a lot of you give me lots of room if you're directly behind me. I appreciate this. I get appreciative looks, but that's cos I'm hot and the Scarlet Lady is just so. damn. cute!
However.
The jackass who decided to pull out in front of me, from a complete stop, and chuck a Uey, taking up all of my lane, as I was heading towards him going fifty-five ks an hour, give or take a few, (or maybe it was half a three-point-turn, or almost a park, I really couldn't tell, what with the, "He's not going is he? Oh my god he's going! Why the fuck is he going?! I'M RIGHT HERE! OH GOD OHGODOHGODBRAKEBRAKEBRAKE!!!" and all) has made me rethink my rethought stance on Adelaide drivers.
My new stance is this: I'm here dammit! You better recognize.

Scootering Scav Hunt
Yesterday I set out on the Scarlet Lady to see where she would take me.
We had a great ride (especially since this time I remembered the sunscreen) and I thought I'd prove it to you:
First we went alll the way up to the top of SSS, and the Scarlet Lady learned how to park in a m/c spot when on top of a mountain. She got to admire the view for about three seconds but then I took her away so she couldn't flirt with the two beasty scooters and one m/c also parked there.
Then I had to drive all the way dooown the mountain, which provided me with some awesome views, in the ''inspiring awe' and if by 'awe' you mean 'terror'' sense of the word. So I didn't/couldn't stop to take any photos. The views, they were there.
Then I went to Brighton Beach (more photos from here later on):
And finally to Glenelg:
I was too much of a chicken to actually drive on Jetty Road (JR, Glenelg) what with all the tram tracks but I did get there. Or maybe I just got the pics off Google Images. You'll just have to trust me.
So how many points do I win?
Oh and for the bonus points: I made it back home to the Hall!

Scootering Day One
I went all the way from Uni Hall to Gma's house and back, and then from the Hall to Marion. And back. Obviously.
It basically used up all of the petrol I had. (Half a tank? A third?) So the next place I have to learn to drive to is the petrol station.
You really have to watch the road when you're riding a scooter in Adelaide. And I mean, the actual road. What's with all the manhole cover things? Some of them aren't too bad, but some are basically bloody great pits into which a little bitty scooter could disappear. So yeah: watch the road.
But then there's the traffic. You have to keep an eye on that too. Lane changes (and roundabouts) are one thing I hate, cos I never know if there's enough room to go or not. But today I figured they're Adelaide drivers and therefore used to idiots suddenly veering in front of them.*
It's good though, as I think I only got overtaken twice and I got to do a whole lot of zooming off at lights cos haha I'm faster than all you suckas! And no-one got mad at me for being too slow, cos guess what? I'm not.
Oh and the slow cruise you do up to traffic lights so you can be all cool and just cruise off without putting your feet down? No point. You sit at traffic lights for hours. Coolness doesn't work so well.
Speaking of which, I'm sunburnt. Again. It's mostly my nose and thighs and my watch tan line. Dude.
*And guys? Those flashing yellow lights aren't there to confuse you. You should try using them sometime to, oh I don't know, indicate something?

Ride like the wind!
I went on my brave scootering exhibition. (Side note: I have my camera! Yay!!!)
I was very brave. Actually I thought I would totally freak out, what with the traffic and the lane-changing and all, but really, I was quite calm. I was right about traffic = slow = scooters rule, and instead of the ride going like this: "Oh my god! Ohmygod! Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!!!", it went more like:
"We missed the turn."
"No we didn't."
"Yes we did, we've been travelling for hours."
"Dude, we didn't miss it."
"I am so sure we've missed it and we're going to end up at Port Wakefield." (Geographically impossible, I'd imagine, but anyway.)
"We didn't miss it. It's a long road. It's a big city."
"Oh there it is. We didn't miss it."
"Jeez."
And yeah, that was me to myself. I'm cool like that.

Let's go to gramma's house to play!
Do you remember that? It was a sound effect thing on a game? book? that we used to have. Really annoying.
Anyway, if perchance I am brave/crazy enough to decide to take the Scarlet Lady to "gramma's house" to play, this is the route (actually routes) that UBD Adelaide suggests I take:
Sturt Rd
R Main South Rd
R Cross Rd
L Portrush Rd
R Payneham Rd
L Lower Northeast Rd
R Gorge Rd
Sturt Rd
R Main South Rd
R Cross Rd
L Portrush Rd
R Payneham Rd
Montacute Rd
L Newton Rd
R Gorge Rd
Yes? No? Crazy?
Let me know.

It's here... and there it'll stay
My scooter's here!!!
Actually, it's now in the Hall carpark.
And likely to remain there as my swipe card (which I had re-activated --or whatever they do to it-- this morning) does not actually work. So I can't get into the "secure" carpark.
Cheers guys.
But also - Yay! My scooter's here!

Scoot
Things about scooters:
They are fun to ride.
They are slow.er. I can do 62kms/hr. Max. Downhill. I am always doing between 55 and 60 ks.
Car drivers are impatient. And rude. And they frequently make me fear for my life. (If all I can see is your headlights in my mirrors, you're too close.)
I will move over into a bike lane sometimes. I get to choose when, you don't.
If the speed limit is 60 or below, I won't.
If there are two or more lanes, I won't.
If I'm in danger of falling off the bike lane into the mangroves, I won't.
Deal with it.
And if I get pulled over for going too slow on McMillans road, I will not be happy. Do not expect me to be. And registration sticker should be the first thing you check. Just a tip.
